Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to October! Thank you for welcoming our parents to the Peek into Learning visits in the classrooms. Parents were impressed with what they saw, and many even wished they could have a second chance to attend an elementary school like ours.

Congratulations to Ellen, Yoshiko, and Yuka for once again running the most popular series of parent workshops this year. A large group of parents participated in the Positive Parenting workshop and learned valuable strategies to help their children thrive socially at home and school.

As the Secondary School prepares for its Week Without Walls, we are excited to welcome Emily Loughead to the Elementary School. The three days with Emily will be instrumental in further refining our literacy practices. Thank you to everyone for your flexibility in accommodating planning meetings and lab sites during these days.

On Tuesday, we will hold our monthly morning briefing in the ELAC Multipurpose Room from 7:50 to 8:25. During the meeting, we will discuss the upcoming Sports Day, logistical details for Parent-Teacher Conferences, and much more about the month ahead.

Please note that this week’s Bite-sized PD on Bridges Math is canceled due to the literacy workshop. The Math Bite will be rescheduled for a future session.

Weekly Updates, Monday, 23 September, 2024

Dear colleagues,

The weather is finally starting to shift toward comfortable autumn temperatures. Thank you to the library team for facilitating the wonderful Dot Day. Also, thank you to everyone for preparing yet another engaging curriculum overview for parents, ensuring they know what is happening and expected in classrooms over the next month or so. The deadline for sending them out via Toddle is on Monday.

The last whole week of September will bring a couple of parent workshops. The first session will introduce parents to the philosophy and practices of the IB PYP, and we invite them to visit classrooms briefly on Thursday. On Friday, Ellen and Yoshiko will engage parents in exploring the excitement and complexity of parenting.

On Wednesday, we will begin preparing for the first conferences and review our report card standards so that we are clear on what we aim for when it comes time to write report cards in December.

Thank you to those who have been addressing emerging conflicts on the playground, staying consistent with the CA Way, and communicating with parents promptly.

We would also like to thank the many interested colleagues who put their names forward for the Elementary R&D team. After reviewing the candidates, Heikki would like to invite Jen Cardon, Amy Silverman, Seth Hylden, and Heather Shirai to join the team. We will soon have our first meeting to begin strengthening and consolidation the implementation of the CA Way, ensuring that we simultaneously embrace a strong sense of belonging as well as social and emotional safety and learning within the Elementary School.
