In case you haven't done so, please check the CA Facebook page for videos, photos and other timely postings!

Dear colleagues,
The autumn colours are here! We trust you have enjoyed the sunny weekend with all those beautiful colors everywhere. Thank you to everyone for your flexibility with regards the CIS/WASC preparatory visit past week. The feedback from the visitors particularly highlighted the excellent quality and consistency of classroom practice and student learning at CA.
This week we will get together on Tuesday morning as ES faculty to go through few procedural and informational matters. On Wednesday, we will have the Student Services Dpt. giving an update to the services we provide to our students in school year 2017-18. The second hour is focusing on the new format of the report card, how to write effective new report cards, and finding out about the timeline.
Finally, one of the annual CA community highlight takes place on Saturday: The International Food and Fun Fair. A wonderful opportunity to enjoy foods from all over the world, enjoy the musical performances, and celebrating the diversity of our community.

Let’s have a great week!

Friday Recess Space

Dear colleagues,

This Friday the Middle School baseball tournament will use part of our Nestle Field. Only one of the three soccer fields will be available for us. ES students can go and watch the tournament during recesses as many of the former ES students are competing in the tournament this weekend.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility!

Falcon Cup - Recesses

Dear colleagues,

The falcon cup creates some changes to the recesses. Additionally, we are not sure if we can have the tournament outside or inside given the weather forecast for today. So here are all the options for today:

In case of dry weather:

ES soccer fields are out of use during playtime.
Students can come and watch the games or play in the playscape (climbing areas, sand, and basketball field) as well as the grass area in front of the cafeteria and the tennis court.

In case of rain:
The tournament will take place in the both gyms.
The Atrium is reserved as the service and a waiting area for those teams, coaches and their parents who are not playing at that time.
During the lunch recess, we should have the 4th and 5th graders in the library. Grade 1 - 3 students would have their indoor recess in class.
Supervision:
Librarians in the library
Maiko and Kaho in the ground floor for 1st and 2nd graders
Celia in the 1st floor for grade 3
In the case of the rainy day, please provide collaborative games, books, or any other activities for students to do during the recess.

Booster Club
Please note that the Booster Club will be selling snacks and drinks during the tournament. Those are meant for the 200 participating soccer players, their coaches and parents. Towards the end of the day, and after lunch, CA students may be able to buy what is left in the booster booths if they have brought money with them. It is important that our ES students consume their snacks and lunch as normal and don't replace them with snacks from the Booster Club.

IB Diploma Mock Up Exam Time

Dear colleagues,

The IB Diploma Exams are soon here and it is time for the mock up exams. In order to ensure the best possible test taking conditions for our grade 12 students, we are asked to avoid the use of Atrium during that time. This will also be the case at the time of the actual exams in April.

The mock up exams take place between Monday to Friday (20 - 24 of March) next week at 8:45 - 15:35 every day. Please, avoid using the Atrium.

Should it rain during next week's lunch playtime, the grades 1-3 are in the Gym and grades 4 - 5 either in their classrooms or in the library.

Thank you

Supervision, transitions and getting ready for holidays

Dear colleagues,

The last week and a day before the holiday and both students and us educators are getting anxious about the holidays and we are all a bit tired for good reasons. The last thing we need is a conflict that creates negative emotions, additional meetings with students or similarly tired parents, etc. This time of the year is often inviting few emotional breakdowns. Below you can find few gentle reminders of the areas we want to be focusing on.

One way to prevent the above is to be extra vigilant in the playground. Please, move around in the playground and observe, guide and spread positive spirit amongst the students. Our presence and words help students to make positive choices and decisions. Follow-up carefully every situation students are reporting to the supervisors to make sure that things don't get escalated. Please, come and pick up your students from the lunch break to follow-up any potential conflict.

Transitions are another area of attention. Many of you do this already, but if you suspect that the students may be running, having heated discussions or arguments or just being noisy as they move, please accompany them to keep the peace.

Additionally, in the classroom, it is good to spend some time discussing and reminding students about behavior expectations and holding everybody accountable for what has been agreed before.

Thank you all for chipping in on this.

Heikki

Cafeteria - Nori and other supplements and snacks in the Cafeteria

Dear colleagues,

Can we please inform, implement and monitor that students cannot buy e.g. nori or any other snacks as part of their lunch. The reason is that most of those snacks are  unhealthy supplements for their lunch and students seem to eat less healthy or even not finish their lunch after a sweet snack or a packet of nori. Students can buy snacks and nori after school.

Recess Protocols Highlights

Please read the Recess Protocols carefully to ensure that we all follow the same expectations and routines in the morning and during the recesses.

Before School
All teachers are responsible for ensuring that those students who arrive between 8:10-8:25 and bring in their bags go outside in the morning
Supervising assistants are responsible for letting students in safely.
Class lines are not necessary for grades 1-5 as long as the students walk in.

Before School on rainy days:
Pre-K/KA - KB in Multipurpose room
Grades 1 - 5 in the ELAC Gym
Supervising assistants are responsible for ensuring that students walk from the gym to their classrooms.

Morning Recess
Please check the morning recess schedule here.
At least one teacher per grade level supervises outside.
Teachers are also responsible for ensuring that students go outside. No library option at this time.
Students are let inside the building after they have formed lines and the playground equipment is back in the shed.
Shed must be locked after the Morning Recess

Rainy day: Students stay in their classrooms and are supervised by their classroom teachers.

Lunch & Recess
Students in Grade 1 start lunch at 12:00 (As students become more skillful in collecting their food in the cafeteria the start time can move closer to 12:10)
Students in Grade 2-5 start lunch at 12:15
Recess starts at 12:25 (students can stay and finish their lunch after this)
Students are asked to line up at 12:55

Rainy day: Pre-K/KA and KB in the Multipurpose Room, Grades 1 - 3 in the ELAC Gym, Grades 4-5 in the Atrium or Library.

All classroom teachers must pick up their students from outside or gym (This is to ensure that we can follow up any conflict or emerging tension immediately and effectively)

Keeping Students Safe: Sun Smart

With this hot and humid weather, it is imperative we ensure student safety. Many students have just returned to Japan from cooler climates and are adjusting to the heat and humidity. A notice has been sent to parents to ask them to provide hats, sunscreen, loose clothing and refillable water bottles.

Over the next few weeks, please also take the following steps to avoid heat exhaustion and dehydration:
  • Water should be available to students at all time.  Require all students to drink before and after outdoor play/PE and to constantly refill water bottles.
  • Hats (and sunglasses if available) should be worn for outdoor recess and PE
  • Monitor students and ask them to stay in the shade when they seem affected by the heat
  • Consider offering a choice of indoor play for students struggling with the heat (may need to collaborate with others for supervision).
Please be aware of the following signs of heat exhaustion and send students experiencing any of these to the school nurse:

·       weakness/feeling faint
·       muscle cramps
·       nausea and/or vomiting
·       irritability
·       headache
·       increase sweating
·       cool, clammy skin
·       suspect elevation of body temperature

Playground Life

Dear colleagues,

As the summer has arrived and the children are actively exploring the playground, please be aware of the following:

1. Please provide guidance for students about a sensitive use of water resources or have a professional conversation with your colleagues and perhaps with the children about the use of clean water in the playground. (This is culturally and geographically a challenging or even sensitive issue. I am not sure if we want to stop children playing with water. However, we tend to educate that water is a limited resource in the world. Children enjoy tremendously playing with the water and do scientific experiments etc. or e.g. just pour a lot of clean water on the ground of which would be seen as a huge waste in some other contexts.)

2. Trees and their branches are getting very close and somewhat aggressive attention by some young and energetic students. Let's be vigilant, prevent and intervene.

3. Some students have played with and removed the grates that cover the ditches in the playground. Yesterday, we had an accident where a student was hurt after stepping into a ditch while running in the playground.

Rainy mornings

Dear all,

This morning when it was raining and many teachers were in a meeting at the MPR, we had some students wondering around in the building. Many of them seemed to be confused where to go.
Can you please remind the students in grades 1-5 that they are supposed to go to the ELAC gym on rainy mornings. If it happens to be a Smart Start morning, the students are still allowed to the gym.

Thank you!

Weekly Update, Monday, 9 May 2016

Dear colleagues,
Thank you to everyone for updating the portal posts. It seems to be an effective way to provide parents the context where the students are learning concepts, practicing skills and developing their dispositions. Many parents have approached Heikki wanting to thank the teachers, for updating the curriculum focus. Additionally, Heikki has received many very positive remarks regarding the student-led conferences. Parents were very impressed with the experience. They were able to see the progress of the students as well as how inquiry helps the students to be engaged and excited about their learning. As usual, excellent work everyone! Enjoy the week!

IB Exams and recesses

Dear colleagues,

The grade 12 students are taking the IB exams as follows in the Main Theatre. Please guide your students so that they avoid using/being in the Atrium during these few weeks. Should there be a rainy day, we will be asking the students to be in the classrooms. To keep the students safe, that will require additional supervision. Each floor will be asked to have at least one teacher available to supervise. You may organize that amongst yourselves. Heikki will inform about the rainy day recesses. Thank you for your understanding and support.
