Weekly Updates, Monday, 2 September, 2024

 Dear Colleagues,

Congratulations on completing all the listening conferences for the start of the school year. Naturally, some will still come with those students who will start school later. However, important connections with families were made, and we learned a lot about our students. Please share your notes with all the relevant teachers.

This week, we will have our first Tuesday morning briefing in the ELAC Multipurpose Room, starting at 7:50 and finishing at 8:25. We will provide information about upcoming dates and events, the assembly, PD updates, learning outcomes data, and newsletters.

This week, we are preparing for next week’s Back-to-school Night (BTSN). The night is an excellent opportunity to share the daily routines, expectations, and highlights of the curriculum and programs and for parents to learn a little more about the teachers their children interact with daily. We will review the content expectations in our Wednesday session to ensure consistency and structure throughout the school. Later, we will send all parents a summary of the important information. However, we advocate for and emphasize the importance of the in-person experience in the evening.

Grades 3-5 will engage in MAP testing from Monday to Thursday, giving us another data point as we plan and design student learning.

Finally, we are looking for Student Council leaders (2) and R&D members (4) for this school year. If you want to join the team, please email Heikki by the end of next week - Friday, Sept 13th.

Let’s have a wonderful week!

Erin, Trevor, and Heikki

Weekly Update, Monday, 26 August, 2024

Dear colleagues,

Congratulations to the PreK students, who are starting their first full days as the youngest learners at CA! As we enter the second week of school, we will focus on establishing all the essential routines.

This week, mixing classes, co-planning, and co-teaching should all be in full swing. Additionally, the students have gotten into bringing their water bottles outside.

On Wednesday, we will meet as a whole school to learn about the PD pathways from Clover. The second part of the session will focus on planning our time between now and the fall break. Further information about the session will follow soon.

This week, we will pay extra attention to the handling of phones and smartwatches and monitor the quality of snacks and lunches that students bring to school. Please use your professional judgment and discuss with your team members when making snack interventions.

We are carefully monitoring Typhoon Shanshan, which is predicted to bring stormy weather and rain to the southern parts of Japan on Tuesday and potentially arrive in Hyogo on Wednesday morning.

In case of a rainy-day recess, we will start with grades 1-3 in their respective classrooms, staying calm by reading, playing board games, or spending time with friends. Grade 4 is invited to the library to read, play games, or spend time in the Steam Lab, and grade 5 will have organized playtime in the ELAC gym. Playground supervisors on duty will be distributed as needed before recess.

Finally, we will have the second round of listening conferences on Friday. This means specialists have the first block open to prepare materials for their activities.

Let’s have a wonderful week!
