Welcome to Elementary School Back to School Night
Dear Elementary School parents,
I hope that the start of the school year has been smooth for you and your child(ren) so far. We are all excited to see everybody back and welcoming the new families in the school. Please note that we have updated our ES Handbook for school year 18-19. You can find plenty of useful and essential information by following this link to the handbook.
We are excited to invite you all for the Back-to-School Night this Wednesday (5 September) at 6:00 pm. We will start in the main theater, from where you will be guided to your child's grade level and classroom meetings. You will also meet your child's Japanese, PE, Visual Art and Music teachers. The evening will finish by 8:10. The Back-to-School Night will be offering you important information about the daily life at school, and you will meet most of the teachers who will be supporting your child(ren)'s learning throughout the school year.
One challenge with the Back-to-School Night is to create a schedule that would accommodate families with more than one child. With two children, it works if both parents can attend and they split and follow two different schedules. However, in the case of only one parent attending for multiple children, or having more than two children in the Elementary School, it is difficult to be in many spaces at the same time. Please do prior planning for the evening to secure at least a brief visit to the classroom of each of your children. Also, it is important to let your children know how you are going to spend the evening so that they know what to expect. Please, find the schedule for the back to school night here.
Finally, please do not hesitate to make a further appointment with your teacher if you would like to know more about learning in the class or if you missed the information due to visiting other teachers' sessions. The Back-to-School Night information will also be published on the class websites after the event.
We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday night!
Sincerely,
Heikki Soini
Elementary School Principal

Weekly Update, Monday 27 August, 2018
Dear colleagues,
Let’s have another start of the school year. We trust that the typhoon day gave everybody some time to recover
from the otherwise busy week and we can turn the typhoon into a positive element of the year.
We will follow the original schedule for the listening conferences parents had booked for this Friday and ask the parents who missed the past Friday's meeting to reschedule a new meeting for Friday the 7th.

We will follow the original schedule for the listening conferences parents had booked for this Friday and ask the parents who missed the past Friday's meeting to reschedule a new meeting for Friday the 7th.
This week will still be about starting the school year. Making sure that everyone remembers and understands the
expectations for learning and being together in class, hallways, and outside, as well as getting used to the idea of
class meetings for building a community of learners.

We are still waiting for upper elementary math and literacy leaders to step forward. Be inspired, and throw your

Please, let Heikki know if you would like to make announcements, or if you would like him to
remind the whole ES about something in the assembly this week. It looks like a shorter assembly than usual as
there are no performances as of now.
