Coronavirus message to the CA Community

Canadian Academy

Coronavirus and the CA Community

Dear CA Community,

Since my last communication to the CA community this past Thursday, we continue to monitor the spread of the coronavirus (2019-nCoV) through the latest news reports as well as official government agencies including the World Health Organization. Members of Canadian Academy's Crisis Management Team met this afternoon to review our procedures for this upcoming week and to make decisions on some future events.

CA Family's Responsibilities
  1. Any CA student who has traveled to China or has had any member of their household travel to China or has hosted a guest from China over the past 2 weeks must report to CA's Health Office immediately upon arrival to school Monday morning. These students will be required to visit the Health Office every morning before school for the next 2 weeks. Please keep children exhibiting signs of fever, cough, shortness of breath, breathing difficulties or respiratory complaints at home and/or visit a medical professional.
  2. Any CA student who has traveled to Wuhan, China over the past two weeks and/or has traveled to or had contact with anyone from the designated affected areas in China must not come to school until further notice. If this is your child's status, please inform the school.
  3. We ask that all CA families monitor their health and follow these protocols:
Image
School Procedures
We have added nursing staff in the Health Office to help assist with a projected increase in health checks from 8:00am to 9:00am this week. Additionally, we are implementing the following protocols:
  • All food services staff will have their temperature checked daily prior to work
  • Hand sanitizer will be purchased and placed in public spaces around the school
  • Teachers will remind students to wash their hands often throughout the day
  • Cleaning staff will disinfect doorknobs and table tops in addition to the regular cleaning schedule
  • Teachers will remind students not to share food and drinks; and
  • All new students scheduled to begin school tomorrow, the first day of Semester 2, will be carefully screened regarding their recent travel, with whom they have had contact, and their current health condition.

School Trips & Events
APAC Basketball, APAC Theater and APAC Band trips, all of which were scheduled to travel to Shanghai or Beijing over the next few weeks, have been canceled. At this time, all other trips will continue as planned.

We will continue to monitor this fluid situation and communicate with the community as necessary. Once again, please feel free to contact the Health Office, your child's principal or me if you have any questions.

Elementary School - Coronavirus message to Faculty

Dear colleagues,
I am writing to you after the leadership team meeting we held this afternoon about paying attention to preventive measures regarding the coronavirus that is causing health concerns in China and slowly in the rest of the world. We are closely monitoring the situation and particularly how the virus may be spreading globally. Some parents have approached us with concerns related to family members or students traveling to and from China. We are providing on-going information to the CA community about the situation and measures taken or considered by the school.

As you know we are a transient community with many families traveling globally and to and from China frequently. Furthermore, Chinese New Year is a particularly busy time of year for travel. Hence, we need to be taking some additional measures to keep everyone calm and safe. It is important that we inform, guide, and supervise the students about normal hygiene expectations with particular emphasis on the following:

- washing hands frequently, particularly when transitioning to/from recesses and specialists as well as before/after eating a snack or lunch
- covering face when coughing or sneezing
- not sharing food or drinks with others
- keeping hands from touching mouth, nose or ears (good luck in the PreK/KA and KB)
- keeping hands to oneself when lining-up or attending class meetings

The cleaning staff will do extra careful cleaning of door nobs and tables during at least the next two weeks and we will place additional hand sanitizers to central places on the campus for the community perusal. Additionally, the Cezars staff will be attending to regular temperature/health checks at the Health Office.

We are also in touch with families who have recently traveled to/from China to ensure that it is safe for them to join the school.

Finally, all students, faculty, and staff are asked to continue to check-in at the Health Office after being sick to avoid spreading any viruses or illnesses.

As I mentioned above, we will monitor the situation daily basis and inform you should there be a need for further actions.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding

Weekly Updates, Monday 27 January, 2020

Dear colleagues,
Happy last week of January! This week we have fewer special events happening if we exclude the day 9 extended
learning on Friday. Can you please make sure to add your plans to our EL Schedule so that everybody knows what
is going on in each class on Friday afternoon.
Thank you to all who contributed to the great assembly again. It is great to see the students sharing their ideas and
thoughts about current learning. It provides them an authentic audience to share how they are developing an
understanding of the units at hand. The next assembly will take place on February the 20th.
As you have read and heard, the coronavirus has started to impact our lives as well. Please, make sure you read
Heikki’s and Jon’s emails about the expectations and actions taken so far to ensure a calm and safe school.
On Wednesday we have some time to plan day 9 and we will inform about the full agenda shortly.
Please note that on Friday the Ronald McDonald Talent Show will conclude the wonderful week.
Riana, Trevor, and Heikki

Feb Running Records and Spelling Inventory

Feb Running Record and Spelling Inventory

As mentioned in our January morning meeting - it's that time of year!

In preparation for 3-way conferences and regrouping students for reading and word study, a running record
and updated WTW spelling inventory will be given for each child.

Due Date into the system is March 1st (however you will want to gather data before 3-way conferences).

Next Thursday, Jan 30th, there will be an optional session for support in taking or scoring running records in the
G1/2 Learning Common 3:40-4:15pm. If you are unable to attend but would like some support, please ask your
Learning Leader.

Reminders:

  • instructional level is recorded (take multiple running records if needed to find instructional level- conversion chart taped to each box)
  • refer to information files in assessment box for reminders on scoring, coding, and finding instructional levels
  • see Learning Leaders if you require books outside of your grade level (Trevor A-N, Riana L-Z)
  • Fountas and Pinnell running record data and Spelling data will be collected for every student 3 times a year
  • Oct (Fiction), Feb (non-Fiction), May (Fiction)

Recording info:
Access this database link to record running record instructional level and WTW spelling stage. Please do not add additional information into the cells, as it is exported to another system. However, feel free to make a copy of your grade level after completing the info if you wish to include your own data such as reading behaviours, MSV miscues and individual notes.

Logistics:

  • let us know if you need a space reserved for taking running records
  • please ask EAL and LS teachers to help out
  • refrain from coaching into any of these testing materials as it interferes with validity
  • refer to this chart for expectations at this time of year
  • add in any new students to the bottom of your list

Due Dates
Nov 10th, 2019 - Fiction
March 1st, 2020 - Non Fiction
May 2nd, 2020 - Fiction

Weekly Updates, Monday 20 January 2020

Dear colleagues,
Congratulations on making it through the first week of 2020. It was great to see how smoothly all classes were back
to routines, busy learning, and it was notable how well all students were treating each other. Thank you for all the
class meetings, reminders, and guidance that has made such a difference in the daily learning and social interactions.

Thank you to the Japanese team for exciting and successful mochi pounding Friday!

We start the week with Extended Learning that will focus on the memorial of the Great Hanshin Earthquake.
Please, be mindful of the needs students may have regarding understanding the historical event and the potential
fears and questions they may have. It would be a good idea to seize any opportunity, not just during Monday, but
throughout the week to respond to student questions or comments regarding the matter.

On Wednesday, we are offering parents an opportunity to learn or re-learn how teaching and learning are organized
and executed in our Elementary School. We will take peek-into-learning tours to all classes the parents may be
interested in. Later in the afternoon, you will hear from the committee members who are working on behavior
intervention and prevention plans and then we will continue planning the next unit.
On Thursday we will all get together to launch the spring term of 2020 at the assembly. Please, contact Trevor
by Monday if you still have something that you or your students would be interested in sharing.
Have a great week!
Riana, Trevor, and Heikki
