Feb Running Record and Spelling Inventory

It's that time of year!

In preparation for 3-way conferences and regrouping students for reading and word study, a running record and updated WTW spelling inventory will be given for each childNote that changes from last year are 1) Use Fountas and Pinnell system 2) It is a non-fiction text and 3) every student is given the running record.

Due Date into the system is March 1st (however you will want to gather data for some before 3 way conferences)

Next Thursday Feb 8th after school, there will be an optional session for support in taking or scoring running records by Literacy Leaders (Karen, Kris, Kim). 3:40-4:15 in Karen Terry's room.

Reminders:
  • instructional level is recorded (take multiple running records if needed to find instructional level- conversation chart taped to each box)
  • refer to information files in assessment box for reminders on scoring, coding, and finding instructional levels
  • see Learning Leaders if you require books outside of your grade level (Trevor A-N, Kim L-Z)
Recording info: Please access this database link to record running record instructional level and WTW spelling stage.  Please do not add additional information into the cells, as it is exported to another system. However feel free to make a copy of your grade level after completing the info if you wish to include your own data such as reading behaviours, MSV miscues and individual notes. Add in any new students to the bottom of your list.

Logistics:
  • let us know if you need a space reserved for taking running records
  • please ask EAL and LS teachers to help out
  • Refrain from coaching into any of these testing materials as it interferes with validity
  • It is possible students were moved back in levels due to rigour of comprehension required in new assessment kits
  • can refer to chart for expectation at this time of year

Fountas and Pinnell running record data and Spelling data will be collected for every student 3 times a year Oct (Fiction), Feb (non-Fiction), May (Fiction)

Due Dates:
Nov 10th, 2017 (extended 2 weeks due to new system)- Fiction
March 1st, 2018- Non Fiction
May 2nd, 2018- Fiction

Faculty Lounge - Locked

Dear all,
Please note that we are trying to keep the faculty lounge locked in the evenings, nights and weekends. This is to secure the personal mailboxes from strangers or students who may accidentally or intentionally wonder in.

The faculty key should open and lock the doors. So please, lock the door after school hours, evenings and during the weekends if you need to visit the lounge.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Weekly Update, Monday 22 January 2018

Dear colleagues,
We are hoping the flu season is not hitting many of us too badly. The weather continues to be cold so
please look after yourself and the students with regards warm enough clothing during recesses.
This Wednesday, we will continue our learning on assessment for the first hour. Please, bring your
assessment tools and tasks to the meeting so that you can do some self-analysis and assessment of the
current assessment tasks and tools you have designed. Again, it is important that the tool is something
that you have designed and used/planning to use to find out if learning took place.

During the second hour of the Wednesday session, the Gr 5 teachers and respective EAL, Learning Support
Teachers and Learning Support Assistants will meet with the Gr 6 team and Liz Andrews to launch
the students’ transition from Elementary to Secondary School.
Other teachers use the second hour for collaborative planning in the Multipurpose Room.
This will allow the Specialist teachers to connect with the classroom teams.

Finally, on Thursday, Kim, Trevor, and Heikki will meet parents to introduce Culture of Thinking as a concept
and practice to the parents.

Have a great week!

Weekly Updates, Monday 15 January, 2018

Dear colleagues,
Welcome back to the second week after the winter break.
We are slowly back in the normal rhythm of school days and the rest of our students have returned from their winter holiday trips by now. We trust that those who attended the annual Shinnenkai party
had a wonderful community bonding time on Saturday.
Thank you to Rob and the PTA for organizing yet another successful evening!

As you know that we are short of substitutes, it is crucial to let Remi and Heikki know as soon as possible if you have any planned absences in mind as it will impact on whether those leave requests
can be accommodated and respected. In the meanwhile, we are working on finding more subs.
If you happened to know someone, please put them in touch with Heikki.

This Wednesday we will be focusing on assessment during our Professional Learning time.
In preparation for the workshop, please bring sample assessment tasks (i.e. student work)
that you or your team have designed this school year. If you already have something from the past week
that is great. If not, anything from semester 1 will do.
We are asking you to bring at least one sample of formative assessment (prior knowledge,
or in the middle of the unit work) and at least one sample of summative assessment.
The assessment task can be in mathematics, language, or UoI as long as it is designed by you
or your team.

Finally, our thoughts are with Kaoru, Ai and their family during their difficult time.
We have organized subs into their respective classrooms. Thank you for your support and flexibility.

Have a good week!
