Dear colleagues,
It is the final and last week of the year 2019 and the whole decade ahead of us! What a journey it has been so far!
We are very excited and proud of everyone and congratulations go to the whole Elementary School for making the
teaching and learning of students, faculty, and parents meaningful, effective, and very successful.
The past week was rich in learning for all the constituencies mentioned above. Thank you to Student Support
Services and Ellen for making the rotations smooth and rich learning experience to all. On Thursday, the Japanese
team had a wonderful parent learning session. Congratulations Emi, Kaho, and Noriko!

This week’s highlights include Extending Learning celebration and Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, and of
course the Holiday Assembly on Friday starting at 9:30 in the Black Box Theater. Another big thank you goes to
the report card writers for a thoughtful and thorough process of carefully crafting powerful comments describing
the process of learning. We are on schedule and the reports will be open on Friday by noon at the latest. The final
report card review will be happening on Tuesday and we are hopeful to be able to upload them to PowerSchool
on Wednesday and Thursday.

Have a great week!
Riana, Trevor, and Heikki

Message from Heikki:
I would like to express special thanks to everyone who helped, particularly to Riana and Trevor for stepping in, in
few places as I was away.
Also, I am grateful for the flexibility and understanding of all the changes that occurred during my absent days,
including the rescheduling of meetings. Finally, I highly appreciated all those caring and encouraging messages
received on Thursday and Friday. I will be joining the troops on Monday again.
Heikki

Wednesday Learning: Student Support & Protocols with Purpose Dec 11

Dear Colleagues,

Thank you everyone for such a high level engagement and stamina at our Wednesday Learning!

Student Support poured their hearts into the research and presented a lot of information. Again, the goal was to share the big ideas about each topic and if you need to zoom in to support one of your learners - just contact one of the team!

Student Support (LS - EAL - Guidance)

Adaptive Schools
In our ongoing effort to support teams, we reviewed three protocol and introduced three new to help with purposeful meeting and student learning. Hope they were as helpful as the conversations were engaging.

Weekly Updates, Monday, 9 December 2019

Dear colleagues,
Welcome to the penultimate week of school in 2019. The holiday season is upon us and there are a number of
different ways grade levels acknowledge the start of the holiday. As many of the holiday parties are co-planned and
co-organized with parents, please, make sure that you keep them limited in time (1-2 periods max) and inclusive
and respectful of all cultural and spiritual approaches of celebrating/not celebrating the season.
Past week Ellen ran a very successful parent coffee morning session on Positive Discipline. There seemed to be a
great demand for a repeat as well as follow-up sessions. On Monday last week, the Behavior Intervention Team met
for the first time to establish a purpose and goal for our work. We will meet one more time before the winter break.
Kristyn Art wanted to extend her thanks to the elementary teachers, students and their families for coming to the
Commedia show and donating to George Dickerson School in South Africa. A total of 101,946 Yen was raised
which is amazing! This will be a huge help to the school and will aid them in getting many projects completed.
This week, alumni Emma Haruka Iwao will share her passion for technology with ES students and the greater CA
community. Thank you to Kae Shigeta for organizing her visit. On Wednesday, the Student Support Team will offer
sessions in supporting learning in the classroom. If you haven’t done so yet, please sign up for the sessions by
following the link to Student support sign up at your earliest convenience. The second part of the Wednesday
session is dedicated to Adaptive Schools collaborative practices. On Thursday, the ES Parent Coffee will focus on
Japanese language learning in advanced/native level. Finally, on Saturday, the CA faculty and staff will get together
to celebrate the start of the winter holiday.
Have a great week!
Riana, Trevor, and Heikki
