Weekly Update, Monday, 19 October

Dear colleagues,
The past week was launched with a wonderful Sports Day, but end up being coloured by sad and heavy news. Thank you for doing your best to focus on the numerous tasks keeping you all very busy preparing for the reporting and conferencing season. Many plans changed and particularly the ES play will still have an impact on the schedules and planning this coming week. We are wishing everyone a positive start for the long week and hoping we can all pace it well and feel positively accomplished before starting the fall break. Have a great week!

Visitors in the ES in November and December

We are welcoming Japanese Teachers from Abeno to visit the Elementary School. There will be three separate visits and each time there will be 10 teachers following lessons and learning about our facilities and organization for learning. They are particularly interested in the range of teaching practices in an international school and to see an IB PYP school in action. The visit is linked to our operational goal to build local and global connections helping us to grow and develop as a school by sharing practice and philosophy with different organizations.

Please mark the following dates into your calendars.
Tuesday, 17 November
Thursday, 26 November
Thursday, 3 December

Victoria Campbell from Abeno wrote the following as an anticipation regarding the visit:
"Canadian academy is so different from a Japanese Primary school, (No-chime,  inclusive education, the use of the library, and so on) it will surely be interesting to Japanese Primary school teachers.  And I hope this exchange will be beneficial to both your school and us."

Tomorrow's Professional Learning and Report Writing time

Just a change of schedule for tomorrow.
Teachers can start with Progress Report writing already at 2:30.
We will gather together as a school in the Black Box Theatre at 3:40.

The focus for tomorrow's Tankyuu sharing session is to connect with members of staff with similar Tankyuu, teacher goals for the year.

Even if you haven't met yet with Heikki regarding your annual teacher goal (i.e. your Tankyuu project), it would be important that you have an idea, sketch or skeleton plan of your Tankyuu before Wednesday meeting so that you can join a relevant group.

Please check the Tankyuu expectations and guidelines here.

Weekly Update October 12

Weekly Update Oct 12th

Dear Elementary School colleagues,
We are starting the last two weeks before the October break and getting ready for the Three-Way-Conferences.
Monday will be a great community day bringing all students, staff and parents together. Let's hope we will have  a great weather and a smooth flow of the day. On Friday, past week, many elementary students enjoyed the wonderful day outside playing soccer. The second annual Falcon Futsal Cup was a huge success. Over two hundred boys and girls joined the well-organized event from nine different schools. The longest traveling teams made their way to our fields from Nagoya and Kyoto. CA teams won both leagues. Congratulations to the organizers, teams, and coaches. We are looking forward to seeing everybody active and outside tomorrow!

Supervision
Let's make sure that students will put all the equipment back to the shed after the lunch recess. We can see balls and frisbees and some other equipment being used by the students after school. Thank you!

Wed Oct 7th Word Work Group Meeting

Welcome back to our group PD focus on Word Work/Word Study

This Wednesday (Oct 7th) self selected groups will reconvene to discuss the articles and resources they have accessed.  Please meet from 2:35 - 3:35 in the same spot in the school as you did last Wednesday, unless another spot is/was agreed upon.

The full hour will be given to group discussion and critical thought.  There will then be more than a month (Nov 25) before the group meets formally again to present how the research can inform our practices at CA. During this meeting (Oct 7th) it will be important to take notes on discussion points and begin to narrow down and summarize the research.

Reminders:
  • This is meant to be a quick quest for research
  • Focus is on what might be considered "typical" for learning/classroom practices not yet focused on ESOL or children requiring additional learning support
  • Focus is still on research,  rather than teaching practices or program (although link may be clear)
Please access the slide presentation from last Wednesday for reminders of the process or instructions.

Please also access your group folder for a place to access research and collect your ideas
