Youcubed from Jo Boaler, Stanford University

Dear youcubians,

We are very excited to share with you today a new, interactive Week of Inspirational Maths!  This year, we have some great new tasks and resources for you and we have also updated the WIM page of our website so that you can choose your own maths adventure!

We started WIM in 2015, releasing our first mindset videos and tasks for the beginning of school and it was such a hit that we have continued it every year. For the fifth anniversary of WIM, we wanted to do something big and bold that would empower teachers.  So, instead of being offered 5 tasks and videos for a week, you can choose any of the tasks or videos that we have on the site, creating your own week (or weeks!) of the most appropriate experience for your students. We think you and your students will have a better experience with this new format, and we will keep adding new tasks so you can revisit and choose tasks all year round.

Try the new WIM now!  You can create a 5-day playlist by exploring the resources on the page and selecting one item from each of the following categories to add to each day:
  • A video with a growth mindset and brain science messages
  • A resource for creating a positive classroom environment
  • An open, creative math task that’s suitable for the grade level you are teaching
Once you have created your playlist, you can save it, share it and even download all of the materials with a single click!  Please share your week with others by using the hashtag, #myWIM.  We love to see photos of teachers and students working on the tasks on social media.

Thank you for bringing the maths revolution to your students,
Jo & the youcubed team
We've added new and exciting tasks!

Wednesday Learning Session #1 - Extended Learning & BTSN Prep

Dear Colleagues,

Thank you for your effort and focus in preparing for our first Extended Learning and for BTSN.

Here are some resources to help your continued planning:

___________________________________________________________________________

What are we 'learning about learning'?

In Ron Ritchhart's last visit, he explained to us that our brains need to retrieve information at least two to three times in order for us to learn. ie. to commit it to longer term memory. The act of sharing our BTSN ideas/plans three times had this principle of learning in mind. In addition, each time we repeated our plan, we reformed our ideas as we heard feedback from our peer or made new connections in the act of speaking it aloud. Please try it out with your learners.

Weekly Update, Monday 26 August 2019

CA Twitter   CA Facebook

Dear colleagues,
Welcome to the first full of school! Thank you all for making the start of the school year so smooth and easy for the students and each other. Congratulations to the new teachers for their flying start and professional setup of your classroom and presentation of yourself as educators to both students and teachers.

This week's highlights include Wednesday meeting and Thursday Elementary School Assembly.
On Wednesday, we will spend the session on looking at and how we might Extend Learning in the Elementary School every 9 days as well as planning the first one coming next Tuesday. Also, this is also the time to start thinking about the Back to School Night.

It would be great if you reminded the parents in your class about the early dismissal on Wednesday.

We are currently scheduling a number of meetings and ideally, we will move into the 9-day rotation with the meetings as well. Tuesday morning meetings (the first one next week) and Wednesday Collaborative Learning Time are off the nine-day rotation. The duty roster will resume next week.

Let's have a great week!

Riana, Trevor, and Heikki
