Weekly Update, Monday 30 September 2019

.

Dear colleagues,
These busy weeks keep on flying by and we can observe amazing learning taking place in all classrooms.
Engaged learners, motivated, hard-working, and energetic teachers resulting in deep and sustainable thinking
and learning as can be seen in the photos from this week.

The Week Without Walls will take the whole Secondary School and our grade 5 to explore learning outside in
nature. Let’s hope the typhoon Mitaga will cooperate and miss our side of the mountains again. We will keep an
eye on its development and make decisions and contingency plans on Monday.  On Monday we will finish the rush
hour of Extended Learning for September. As you may have noticed September is the only month where we have
three Extended Learning times. I am sure everyone is looking forward to working with colleagues and exploring the
curriculum differently and deeply.

On Tuesday morning we will get together as a faculty for the morning meeting. On the agenda, we have sharing
dates and milestones that will ensure a comfortable and successful journey to parent conferences and long-awaited
October break. Please use the opportunity for any announcements or shout outs. Later that Tuesday morning we
will all gather to the Main Theater to enjoy the second ES assembly of the year. There is plenty of performances
and things to see so please make sure that you are ready and seated by 10:30.

On Wednesday, we will first look at ways we can store our collaboration and curriculum documentation in a
manner that would allow them to be found easily by everyone involved. Furthermore, we will spend time on
planning the next UoI as well as the October Extended Learning session. Additionally, the PE - Art - Mu teachers
will work on developing effective rubrics and looking at other assessment tools.
Let’s have another great week!

Weekly Update Monday, 23 September, 2019

Dear colleagues,
We hope you had a relaxing weekend despite the windy and somewhat rainy weekend which seems to be both
cooling down the temperatures and offering perfect conditions for the start of the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

It is evident that students are fully engaged in learning in all classrooms and no matter where you step in,
both deep learning and artful teaching are taking place. We have established solid routines for learning throughout
the Elementary School!

Past week’s Extended Learning brought successfully together with the ELAC teams, Grades 1 and 5, Grades 2
and 4, and Japanese department with Gr 3 and dispersed specialists teachers to support the groups with their
expertise.  As we are experiencing and observing, on one hand, the impact of the Extended Learning on student
learning and on the other hand, the opportunities created for collaboration and breaking grade-level boundaries,
we may ask ourselves how might these opportunities impact on our culture of learning?
This week’s highlights include busy posing for school photos, EAL parent coffee morning, Falcon Cup, and an
energetic collaborative planning session on Wednesday afternoon. We are looking forward to welcoming back the
company that took our school photos last year. They were able to connect with the children and adults resulting
in beautiful moments and smiles. Saiko and her EAL team will be sharing our model for supporting EAL learners
on Wednesday. We expect a high turn out of parents, as the majority of our students are EAL learners. On
Thursday, CA will be hosting the long-awaited Falcon Cup. Over 200 Grade 3 - 5 students from 8 different schools
will be competing in a futsal tournament. As always, it is a great day of sportsmanship and connecting locally with
other schools. So a busy week ahead of us. Let’s make the most of it!
