Report Card Guidelines for June 2018

Dear colleagues,

As we are getting to the point of writing our strengths and next steps, here are some guidelines for writing those important messages:

Timeline:
2 May Report Cards Open
29 May Report Card Comments to proof readers
10 June all edits done
11 June final review
12 June Report Cards populated to Power School
13 June Report Cards open to parents

Proofreading:
PreK/KA: Kim
KB: Kim
Gr 1M, Gr 1N, Gr 1 Japanese: Kim
Gr 1T: Heikki
Gr 2: Trevor
Gr 3: Heikki
Gr 4: Heikki
Gr 5 Trevor
EAL: Saiko
Learning Support: Rose, Derrick -> Heikki, Trevor, Kim

Character limit is 600 in each section
Strength (Verb + -s or -es)

- We write strengths steps in a bullet form
- We only personalize with a name or writing in full sentences when writing general comments
- We start with a verb that describes the learning
- We write the strengths in simple present third person singular:

E.g.
  • reads complex non-fiction texts independently and with confidence
  • writes with a clear organizational structure
  • communicates ideas clearly while working in collaborative groups
  • models thinking with many different representations

Next Step: (verb no -s or -es)
- We write next steps in a bullet form
- We only personalize with a name or writing full sentences when writing general comments
- We start with a verb that best describes the action of the new learning
- We write the next steps in simple present singular without third person indication

E.g.
  • read complex non-fiction texts independently
  • infer beyond the literal plot
  • articulation of digraphs “th” and “sh” when speaking
  • count on as a strategy when adding
General comments:
Character limit for general comment is 600.
This is an opportunity to personalize the comment. We write in a positive tone, describing student strengths and
demonstration of growth in social and self-regulating skills as well as their showing of positive attitudes and behaviors.

Process:
Both general comments and strengths and next steps should be written on google doc first and shared with Kim, Trevor, and
Heikki for editing and feedback. In case of hesitation or uncertainty, you may want to send a couple of comments to your
colleagues or Kim, Trevor, and Heikki for initial feedback before writing them all.

Link to the Guidelines shared in the Report Writing Workshop in November 2017

Finally, If you have any concerns or questions about using or logging on the PowerTeacher, please contact either
Kim or Trevor for support.

Weekly Update, Monday 30 April, 2018

Dear colleagues,
Congratulations for completing both the PYP Exhibition and Student-Led Conferences! Thank you to all
for the incredible amount of work that went into these culminating events of the school year.
Both of the annual celebrations of student learning were huge successes. Happy, proud, and excited
parents as well as confident, accomplished and matured students were in the building during Thursday and Friday last week. We should be very happy and excited about the progress and qualities as learners students are demonstrating at this time of the year.

This week will be short and we are all having some well deserved time off during the Golden Week.
Notable events of the week include ES faculty meeting and Screening of the movie School for
Everyone as a whole faculty. On Wednesday we will finish at 16:00. However, those around should
check out the faculty Pub Quiz on Wednesday night in the BBT. Peter Stevenson and Josh Hudson
have put together yet another amazing, funny night for the faculty to enjoy. Pizza and beverages are
served.
Let’s enjoy the short week!

Weekly Update, Monday 23 April, 2018

Dear colleagues,

We trust you enjoyed the sunny and very summer-like weekend. Thank you all for flexibility and supporting the
APAC soccer tournament and the ES assembly. Past week we also had a very successful parent coffee morning.
Liz Durkin and Kae-san gave a wonderful presentation of the RAT model in tech integration as well as shared what
is happening in the Elementary School in terms of amplifying and transforming learning through technology.
This week will be busy with MAPs training on Monday (a small cohort), Headmaster’s forum for parents and
wider school community, Core Planning Team meeting in relation to CA Strategic Plan and culminating with both
PYP Exhibition and Student Led Conferences. The Wednesday Professional Learning time has been dedicated to
preparation for Exhibition or Student Led Conferences. Teachers are expected to stay until 16:00 though.
This quite busy week will lead us into the short next week in the anticipation of the Golden Week break.
Let’s have a good one!
