Weekly Update, Monday 26 November 2018

Dear colleagues,
Welcome back from the wonderful long weekend! Thank you for all teachers-to-teachers session leaders and active
participants. Learning from colleagues is the most impactful professional development in any given school.
The last three weeks before the winter break are upon us and since Dr. Medina’s visit was postponed,
the silver lining is that we can fully focus on normal routines in the classrooms every single day and achieve
significant strides in student learning. This Wednesday, we will return our focus back to the scheduling draft for
further exploration and teacher input. The remaining time is reserved for report card writing.
Heikki will be returning school from PD on Tuesday. Let’s have a great week!

Dr. Jose Medina is here soon. Are you ready!

Dear colleagues,

This week Trevor, Ellen, Saiko, and Kasumi will join your planning meetings to engage you with a conversation about intercultural competence, international mindedness, and language diversity.

Why Dr. Jose Medina is coming to CA?
Time to time and particularly now when the student demographics are changing, international schools are redefining or at least revising how to best meet the needs of its student population. We at Canadian Academy are taking a closer look to see how do we respond to the growing language and cultural needs of our students. In addition, the CIS/WASC/IB visit will help us to further explore our stance and practices on international mindedness. Jose Medina is helping us to launch this conversation by working with our students and teachers next week.

30 - 40 minutes during your collaborative planning time
During the planning meeting Trevor, Ellen, Saiko, and Kasumi, will facilitate conversation including Who is Jose Medina?, Why he is at CA?, What practices we already have in place to embrace intercultural competence and language learning, and What specifically you are hoping to learn from Dr. Jose Medina?

Who
The following colleagues will be in touch with the teams to schedule the meeting as follows:

Trevor with grades 3 - 5, and specialist team (PE, VA, MU)
Saiko with grades 1 - 2 and the EAL team
Ellen with PreK/KA and KB (Ellen may need release time organized by Kim)
Kasumi with the Japanese team

Learning support teachers can join their respective grade level meetings as best suited.

Weekly Updates, Monday 19 November, 2018

Dear colleagues,
We trust you enjoyed the sunny autumn weekend. We welcome Kim back on Tuesday from her school visits.
This week will be our preparation time for the professional development around the concepts of international
mindedness and cultural proficiency lead by our guest expert on linguistic and cultural diversity, Jose Medina, in
the following week. With the help of Trevor, Saiko, Kasumi, and Ellen you will have an opportunity to learn about
Jose Medina, discuss ideas, and current practices in your class and come up questions on international mindedness
that may be addressed during Dr. Medina’s visit. On Wednesday we will spend the first hour as in lieu of report
card writing and the second hour is dedicated to learning from our colleagues through Teachers to Teachers
sessions. We will finish the week already on Thursday to enjoy the three-day weekend.
Have a great week!
Kim, Trevor, and Heikki

Weekly Updates, Monday 12 November, 2018

Dear colleagues,
What a great weekend we had for the International Food and Fun Fair. I am sure that those who had the opportunity
to either volunteer or just enjoy the food, drinks, shows, and friends will join us congratulating the PTA for
organizing such a wonderful community event. Also, congratulations for Satsuki-san and the wonderful singers
at Ritz-Carlton for doing the annual launch of the Christmas season. This time it was even noticed by a tv-channel
who broadcasted the event.
This week we will continue working with our report cards on Wednesday On Tuesday, we have invited parents
to join the screening of The Screenagers at 7 pm. Also, please note that the next assembly is approaching. Grade 5
students are invited to be MCs and others to perform in the ES school community event with Student Council,
ES Counselor, and dancers among many others.
Let’s have a great week!
Kim, Trevor, and Heikki
