Weekly Update, Monday 30 October, 2017

Dear colleagues,
Welcome back! We trust that everyone has had a wonderful fall break and that you survived the typhoon without major damages or delays in your travels. All students are surely excited to return back to school and learning, although some may suffer from jetlags or otherwise holiday tiredness for the first couple of days.
This week’s highlights include the preparatory visit from CIS/WASC. This will require some extraordinary arrangements for allowing different teachers to meet the preparatory visiting team.
The actual visit coming next year will be an excellent tool for assessing and evaluating our functions and operations as a school. Let’s welcome to preparatory visiting team welcome to our school this week and learn from them how to best prepare for next year.
On Wednesday, everyone with a literacy role in grade level as well as PreK-Gr 2 and Gr 3 - 5 levels will have a professional learning meeting as a group with Kim and Trevor. Those who are not meeting this time will have a brief introduction to Cognitive Coaching. The second hour of the Wednesday Professional Learning time is designated for your Tankyuu goal investigation and connection making.

Weekly Updates, Monday 16 October 2017

Dear colleagues,
Welcome to the last week before the October Break. It looks like we are having the first a little bit cooler and rainy week ahead of us. Hopefully, we can have a few outdoor recesses despite the forecast.
This week’s highlights are definitely the Parent-Teacher conferences on Thursday and Friday. Our parent community is very supportive yet curious about their child’s learning at CA - as they should be. As these conferences are the only reporting tool this time, the parents are excited about meeting the teachers and hearing how the first two months have gone and how they can best support their children to do well in the future. Please note that the school will serve an early dinner on Thursday and lunch on Friday to the conferencing faculty.
The ES Leadership team (Kim, Trevor, and Heikki) will get together on Tuesday afternoon for a longer planning session to reflect the start of the year and to plan ahead. Finally, at the end of this week it is time to congratulate ourselves for a successful start of the year and wish everyone a wonderful holiday!
Let’s have a wonderful week!

Literacy Assessment (Running records and Spelling stages)

Running Records 2017/18

Fountas and Pinnell running record data will be collected for every student 3 times a year Oct (Fiction), Feb (non-Fiction), May (Fiction)

Due Dates:
Nov 10th, 2017 (extended 2 weeks due to new system)- Fiction
Feb 9th, 2018- Non Fiction
May 2nd, 2018- Fiction

Reminders:
  • instructional level is recorded (take multiple running records if needed to find instructional level- conversation chart taped to each box)
  • refer to information files in assessment box for reminders on scoring, coding, and finding instructional levels
  • see Learning Leaders if you require books outside of your grade level (Trevor A-N, Kim L-Z)
Recording info: Please access this database link to record running record instructional level and WTW spelling stage.  Please do not add additional information on this form, as it is exported to another system. However feel free to make a copy of your grade level after completing the info if you wish to include your own data such as reading behaviours, MSV miscues and individual notes.

Logistics:
  • let us know if you need a space reserved for taking running records
  • please ask EAL and LS teachers to help out
  • Refrain from coaching into any of these testing materials as it interferes with validity
  • It is possible students may be moved back in levels due to rigour of comprehension required in new assessment kits

Friday Recess Space

Dear colleagues,

This Friday the Middle School baseball tournament will use part of our Nestle Field. Only one of the three soccer fields will be available for us. ES students can go and watch the tournament during recesses as many of the former ES students are competing in the tournament this weekend.

Thank you for your understanding and flexibility!

Weekly Update, Monday, 9 October 2017

Dear colleagues,

From a successful Futsal Tournament to welcome to the Sports Day! Thank you to all players, teachers, parents, volunteers and of course Sim and Hiroki for running such a smooth Falcon Cup on Friday. It was great to see so many visiting in the region. We learned about sportsmanship, competitiveness and how to play soccer effectively in a small space indoors.
Today, on the annual Sports Day, the CA community celebrates its sense of togetherness and belonging. From the youngest to the oldest students in the school will join teams to have fun and compete with a smile on their faces. Families will join us to cheer for all children on the school grounds and may stay for a picnic. I am sure everyone will enjoy the special CA community day.
All ES students will return to their classrooms before they are dismissed either to their parents or going home on their own. In case the students are going home on their own, please make sure that their parents are aware of them going home early today. Faculty may leave today after the students have been dismissed.
On Wednesday Trevor and Kim will be leading the planning session for teacher-parent conferences. Also from Wednesday to Friday Kim and Trevor will be in charge of the Elementary School as Heikki is joining the counselors and the rest of the leadership team for a child protection workshop in Hong Kong. Finally, in case you missed the blog posting earlier, this week’s assembly has been postponed.

Let’s all have a great week!
