Weekly Updates, Monday, 1 November, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

Happy November 1st and welcome back to the wonderful world of learning and discovery! We trust you have enjoyed the fall break and hopefully feel energized and inspired to lead the learning for the equally rejuvenated students of ours. As we return you can see that we have exactly seven weeks to go to the next milestone, the winter holiday. Luckily we have one long weekend and a PD day on inclusion and DEIJ towards the end of November.

In Elementary School the winter holiday milestone also means that we will complete our first report card communicating about the student progress so far. The learning data just collected for the conferences and deepened knowledge of the students will function as a springboard for designing learning for the next seven weeks and a foundation for reporting student learning against the grade-level standards chosen for the report cards.

We start the week with Extended Learning which will surely add to the excitement of starting school on Monday. ELAC will be filled with excitement in exploring shape and space through creativity and being curious about how the children use language to describe their thinking and solutions. Grade 3 is exploring the science of organisms, Grade 4 is building student and teacher capacity in conflict resolution, and Grade 5 is focusing on Sustainable Development Goals. Grade 1 continues to utilize art as an inspiration for learning.

At the Tuesday morning meeting this week, we will share the timeline for the report card writing process. On Wednesday next week, we will review the processes of completing the report cards including how to write concise, criterion-based, and actionable descriptions of student learning and their strengths, and next steps.

Welcome back and let’s have a great week!

Riana, Trevor, and Heikki

A short message from Heikki:

Dear all,

I am so grateful for all the support I have received from you and your understanding of my life situation. Riitta is happy that I am here to look after her and we enjoy every moment and day I am here in Finland with her. She sends her warm regards and well wishes to everyone and is looking forward to the opportunity to visit Japan in the near future. Please, do not hesitate to reach out for any guidance, conversation, or coaching during this time. I will have my zoom open from 11 am onwards every day. I will share my permanent link via email with you separately. I look forward to hearing from you about your daily life at school. So please, keep me updated.

Weekly Updates, Monday, October 18, 2021

What an exciting week we have ahead of us! First of all the weather has taken a turn and maybe we can turn off the A/C for a while. Secondly, congratulations to the EAL team on the successful parent sessions about the ways we support our multilingual learners. Thirdly, this week is a definite milestone for the school year. On Thursday, we will start the parent-teacher conferences and when we are done on Friday, we are all heading off to a well-earned fall break!

This week we will also welcome the PTA to facilitate the Halloween party. It has been a while since we had that happening on campus. Although there are some signs that the COVID-19 situation in Japan is taking a turn for the better and that we are enjoying the slight taste of normalcy, we still have to accept the fact that the numbers will continue to fluctuate with new peaks and that there is a real possibility of new variants coming along.

On Tuesday afternoon, the R&D team will have their first meeting and on Wednesday we designate time for both collaborative planning and preparation for the conferences.

Once again, congratulations to the proud new parents Cara and Liam on the arrival of Juniper! Thank you to Rose for stepping into Liam's shoes!

Let’s enjoy this wonderful week, make the most of the parent conferences, and we wish you all a wonderful fall break!

Riana, Trevor, and Heikki
