Tuesday morning Kim will meet with parents to follow up from the parent workshops with Matt Glover. She will be using our literacy overview and word study overview documents as a guide, but will also facilitate discussion and answer questions regarding literacy practices and philosophy in ES. If you have predictions of some parent questions, or wish for Kim to emphasize a specific aspect of our program, please feel free to come and see her before Tuesday.
A few key points Kim plans to share with parents:
1) Promoting literacy at home: Strategies to increase interest and motivation for young readers and writers.
2) Reading: decoding vs meaning making
- decoding: alternative strategies to "sound it out". Why take-home books are at independent reading level (instructional level at school)
- meaning making: literal vs higher order comprehension questions
3) Writing: conventions vs composition
- conventions: why we rarely correct student spelling and explain developmental stages of spelling.
- composition: what does it mean to read like a writer
