Inquiry and Student Centred Learning - Replay

Good Morning Everyone!

This will be the last day of our Inquiry and Student-centred Learning Workshop! Two of the highlights for the day are the Parent Coffee in the BBT from 8:40-9:40 and our afternoon PD. If you have time this morning, please come in to join the Parent Coffee to see how Tania will help them construct/build upon their understanding of inquiry.

About student-centred learning, we were lucky to observe Tanya in action three times and we would like to hear your take-aways. My take-aways connect with my recent Cultures of Thinking workshop with Ron Ritchart. It was evident in the way she used 'language' and how that language provided 'opportunities' for student thinking. Language and providing opportunities for learning are two of the eight cultures of learning. Here are a few things I noticed:

Conditional language
- Where might you see that?
- What would happen if?
Open questions:
- What makes you say that?
Naming and noticing:

As teachers we have the power to name and notice the thinking that students are doing, providing them with more sophisticated language for their thinking: “That’s an interesting connection.” or naming a concept for them.
Coaching:
- So you are saying. . ." to clarify that you have understood their meaning.

These are just a few of the ways she used language to listening to and surface student thinking.

Please make sure to add your take-aways to our Padlet. Simply double-click to leave a comment or photo. Here is a quick screen pic of the Padlet so far.
