Agency: The first three weeks in our classes

Agency: Voice Choice and Ownership

Everyday we make many of the decisions for our students about the learning, our environment and the routines. How might we begin shifting to include our learners in these decisions?

Anne van Dam was the main researcher for the IB for the development of student agency. This link is a link to an mp3 of her agency podcast (25 mins). You can download and listen on your phone or add it to iTunes. It's free!

Here are three patterns that have emerged in what we are trying out in our classrooms. (pics)

How might we encourage agency within themselves as learners?
  • Why should we learn another language?
  • How do we deal with challenges, disappointments or successes?
  • How do you react when facing failure or uncertainty?
  • How are we showing independence?
How might we encourage agency within their environment?
  • How can we organize our classroom for learning?
  • What information should we display to help our learning?
  • What spaces can we create to help our learning?
How might we encourage agency within their classes or circles of friends?
  • What agreements do we need to learn well together?
  • What are positive learning behaviour?
  • How can we fairly make decisions as a class?
  • How can we create ideas and/or solve problems?
  • How do we create a 'safe' classroom for sharing our thinking/ideas?
  • What happens if your idea is not selected?
  • How do we choose the ideas we will use?
How might we encourage agency with the content and timing of their learning?
  • What should our first days of school look like?
