Weekly Update, Monday 14 October, 2019

Dear colleagues,
As Tokyo and other northern prefectures are still battling with the damage and tragedies caused by the Hagibis
typhoon, it is easy to see how lucky we were to have missed the big storm. Let’s hope there are no further fatalities.
We have two shorter weeks of usual learning ahead of us before the fall break. Tomorrow, the sports day will once
again bring students and families together to celebrate the CA community and we will be enjoying some more
serious and some less serious competitions between the red and gray. Let’s hope the rain will stay away.
Last week we had a couple of very successful events.
First, on Wednesday, parents joined Heikki to peek into learning. We were observing typical teaching and learning
behaviors at school. All parents who joined the coffee morning were truly impressed with the learning they observed
in the classrooms. Their comments included “there is an amazing spirit and focus on the class”, “students are asking
good questions to truly understand the topic”, students were teaching each other”, and” there were so many different
ways the teachers taught the children: one-on-one, small group, and whole class.” We collected data on the typical
teaching and learning behaviors and they were able to see them all taking place in the school and many of them eve
in one class during their short visit. Thank you again for the amazing cutting edge learning that is on display every
single day in the Elementary School!

Secondly, we had our fourth successful Extended Learning time taking our highly engaged students to a journey
thinking and delving deeply into the different concepts we are exploring in our units of inquiry.
Finally, we hope that you have an initial idea of the Tankyuu goal you may be exploring this year to further develop
teaching and learning. Heikki will start scheduling Tankyuu goal meetings where you can together explore your
thinking so far and also share the observations and thoughts from the first quarter of the year.
Let’s enjoy the week!
Riana, Trevor, and Heikki
