Weekly Update, Monday, 28 September 2020

Dear colleagues,

The month of October will welcome us this week and we have five full weeks to go before parent-teacher conferences and the fall break. Looking back, we have successfully designed and managed another five weeks of learning already. We are halfway through the busy launching-of-the-year-stretch and I feel that we can be incredibly happy with the way school is running and how meaningful learning is taking place in every classroom - every day.

We start the week with another Extended Learning on Monday afternoon. Yet another precious opportunity to demonstrate that learning is fun, meaningful, inspirational, yet complex and challenging human endeavor.

On Tuesday, we have our morning meeting to look ahead to the Tankyuu schedule, how we will prepare for parent conferences, and what is in the plans for the PD days after the fall break, etc.

On Wednesday afternoon, we will continue our process of exploring the Less is More and Deep Learning concepts through the lens of inquiry and how to design transdisciplinary learning with creativity and collaboration.

In addition to all the above, grades 3 -5 will be engaged in MAPs testing. As always, the MAPs testing offers another data point in support of all the assessment data we collect in classrooms every single day in learning language and mathematical thinking.

Have a wonderful week!

Riana, Trevor, and Heikki

COVID-19 Updates

Thank you for still maintaining the high expectations and practices for physical distancing and hygiene protocols. We see most students using hand sanitizers independently and even reminding each other about it. We would also like to acknowledge Julia’s and Enoch’s positive influence at the top of the stairs as they are welcoming students in and collecting and checking the blue cards. There are plenty of smiles and warm feelings shown by the students as they feel welcome to school every single morning. Additionally, our nurses are working really hard to ensure that protocols regarding missing blue cards, students returning from sickness, and other complications are taken care of swiftly and with a smile. All of that above makes a huge difference in keeping the school safe and our campus open.

The following things are something we want to draw your attention to:

  • Continue wiping tables every day

  • Walking your classes to both snack and lunch in the cafeteria

  • Minimizing the up and down movement on stairs e.g. fetching water bottles, baseball equipment, or wiggle boards, etc.

  • Paying attention to the physical distance (1-2m) in the classroom when teaching the whole group and placing the children in pairs or smaller groups

  • Utilize pacing and grouping strategies when organizing students to either start using/return equipment and release for transitions
