Getting Started with Maths Learning - Tips #4

Dear Colleagues,

The first math cross-over meeting happened last week between G4 and G5. The meeting consisted of a sharing session about the manipulatives & modelling, and a reflection session. The feeling of time constraints was a concern. Here are some ideas from the group to manage and put it in perspective:
  • We are trying Bridges out for the first time, it won't be ideal and that is okay
  • Allow the sessions to spill over into the next day
  • Spend time to get to know the vocabulary and the manipulatives over following the sessions as they are intended.  *There is a lot of assumed knowledge as we go up the grade levels.
  • Look for the 'Challenge' activity for students that finish the student book quickly or ask them to solve the problems using another strategy.
  • Adaptations due to time restraints are expected and respected
Module Three Manipulatives
These will be arriving later today or tomorrow. If you need anything urgently for today, please let Trevor know.

Wed. PD Sept 13:
As the mid-way point in the first five weeks of implementation, we will have time to check in about trying out Bridges, share ideas/questions/concerns, and become familiar with more of the modelling and manipulatives.
**Make sure to each bring a manipulative and an artefact (notebook/think sheet) that shows how students used it.

Here is an example of what grade five might bring:
